Historically famous for thalassotherapy, Bretagne has become the national leader in marine biotechnology, the latter being used in the beauty products of major brands worldwide. 50% of research is carried out within the region where the sector employs 6,000 employees and generates a revenue of €1.8 bn. The Fourth-largest global player, Yves Rocher (La Gacilly) represents 3,000 jobs and a revenue of €1.2 bn. The 150 others in the industry are algae producers, seaside plants (salicornia, criste-marine), processors that extract active ingredients for formulators, or companies like Phytomer (Saint-Malo) which manufacture finished products. Many subcontractors remain little known such as Agrimer, Technature, Sciences et mer, Lessonia, Codif… They work for major brands such as Clarins and L’Oreal.
