Just before celebrating its fiftieth anniversary, the French leader and world no. 3 in generating sets, SDMO (Brest, 750 employees, €440M turnover 2015), is investing in a new head office which will house 130 employees by end 2016. Only about fifty of the employees in the factory which produces small generating sets will remain at the commercial port. SDMO achieves 25% of its turnover in Africa where it employees some twenty people (Togo, Algeria, Morocco and South Africa) and wishes to expand into East Africa, especially Kenya. The European market is focused more on security – hospitals, airports, data centres, etc. – whilst in Africa it relates to pure electricity production.
Developments are also planned in the Middle East and Latin America, even the capacity market in the United Kingdom, which uses generating sets in support of the electric grid linked to renewable energies. SDMO is found in 134 countries.
SDMO has belonged to the Kohler group since 2005. Kohler is an American, family-run multinational, with the Kohler Power System branch designing and manufacturing generating sets.
