While they will not be connected to the continental power grid until 2030, the islands of Molène, Ouessant and Sein are embarking on an energy transition programme to enable them to be exclusively powered by electricity from renewable sources: wind, ocean currents, and solar energy.
In partnership with the departmental board, the project involves the installation of wind turbines and photovoltaic panels, improving the energy performance of existing buildings, modernisation of public lighting, actions to reduce energy consumption in private homes, and installation of autonomous recharging stations for electric vehicles.
Ouessant is innovative in this type of projects since they benefited from the Sabella tidal turbine for several months, which will be immersed again in spring 2017.
